Since its founding in 2003, the Morelia International Film Festival (FICM) has cultivated new audiences and disseminated Mexico’s film culture through an inclusive and hospitable platform for national filmmakers.

Consolidating itself as one of the most important film events in the country and a benchmark in Latin America, this festival has been an essential space for the promotion, dissemination and celebration of Mexican cinema, both for established filmmakers and new voices.

Its importance lies not only in its cultural impact, but also in the power of transformation of a national cinema and the importance of identifying new Mexican talents whose works can cross aesthetic and cultural borders, inspire artistic dialogue at an international level, and thus have a strong impact on society.

In addition, FICM maintains a link with the Cannes Film Festival’s Critics’ Week, which specializes in presenting first and second films. A selection of films from the Critics’ Week is presented every year with the presence of some of their directors or protagonists. In turn, the Critics’ Week screens some of FICM’s winning films.

A STAGE FOR MEXICAN CINEMA

Over the years, the festival has positioned itself as a key platform for directors, producers, screenwriters and actors to show their work to a diverse and critical audience. Films that have passed through FICM have gained international recognition, consolidating Morelia as a hotbed of talent and creativity.

The festival not only exhibits feature films, but also short films and documentaries, genres that often find in this event one of the few opportunities to be seen on the big screen. Although the main focus of FICM is Mexican cinema, the festival has also been able to build bridges with the international film industry. Each year, Morelia welcomes filmmakers, critics and world cinema personalities, which enriches the cultural dialogue and opens opportunities for co-productions and collaborations.

A SPACE FOR REFLECTION

FICM has also become a forum to discuss relevant issues through film. Films that address social, political and cultural issues find in the festival a space to be seen and debated. This approach turns cinema into a tool for reflection and social transformation, reinforcing its role as an art form committed to reality.

FICM is approaching its third decade, and its relevance continues to grow. In a world where digital platforms have transformed the way we consume film, the festival maintains its essence as a space for face-to-face encounters, where cinema is experienced collectively.
