In summer, mornings in Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo begin on the water, while afternoons unfold across beaches, coastal trails, and long Pacific sunsets. It's the season when the destination showcases some of its defining experiences: nature, outdoor adventure, local cuisine, and an enduring connection to the sea.

One of the season's most meaningful experiences takes place at dusk. Along the region's beaches, travelers join local communities to witness the release of newborn sea turtles as they make their first journey toward the ocean. More than a memorable sight, it is a conservation effort that reflects the close relationship between the destination and its natural surroundings.

From Zihuatanejo's pier, small boats depart for Playa Las Gatas, one of the bay's best-known beaches. The short crossing offers a different perspective of the coastline before arriving at calm, clear waters ideal for spending the day snorkeling, swimming, or simply relaxing by the shore. A natural reef shelters the beach, creating excellent conditions for observing tropical fish and other marine life.

For those drawn to the waves, nearby Troncones and La Saladita are among Mexico's most celebrated surf destinations. Their consistent breaks welcome both experienced surfers and first-timers taking lessons with local instructors. The laid-back atmosphere of these coastal communities makes every session feel as much about the destination as the sport itself.

To experience the bay at a slower pace, paddleboarding and kayaking offer another way to explore the coastline. Paddling across Zihuatanejo Bay at sunrise, heading toward Ixtapa Island, or exploring the waters around the Potosí Lagoon reveals the landscape from a different perspective, shaped by the rhythm of the sea and the contours of the coast.

Below the surface lies another world to discover. Playa Las Gatas is one of the area's premier snorkeling spots thanks to its exceptional water clarity, while certified dive operators lead excursions to rocky formations, reefs, and shipwrecks inhabited by an impressive diversity of marine life.

Further offshore, sport fishing remains one of Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo's signature experiences. During the summer months, specialized boats head into the Pacific searching for sailfish, blue marlin, mahi-mahi, and tuna, guided by local captains whose knowledge of these waters has been passed down through generations.

The coastline also offers a faster pace. Jet skiing, banana boat rides, and sailing excursions provide different ways to experience the bay, with certified operators ensuring both safety and a more profound understanding of the marine environment.

As evening approaches, Playa La Ropa becomes the natural place to end the day. As the sun sinks below the horizon, beachfront restaurants welcome diners with menus centered on freshly caught seafood and regional flavors. Dinner, accompanied by the sound of the waves and the changing light over the bay, captures the essence of summer on Mexico's Pacific coast.
