Take a close look. What do you see? Two volcanoes, or a path marked by the lava of an erupting volcano. The Zapotecs referred to them as “the heart of the mountain,” believing in an opportunity for rebirth, to build new ideas upon the past. This canvas, part of the art collection at the boutique hotel Pug Seal Oaxaca, is the work of artist Rafael Uriegas and he named it “Volcán Fuego” (Fire Volcano). Art is an essential part of the experience you will have at the hotel. After gazing upon this piece, while sipping coffee seated in this almost golden armchair, rise, turn left, and peer over the railing. Let the mural that runs along each of the walls of the hotel’s interior courtyard absorb you. The most magical part is returning at dusk, when the exterior light contrasts with the illumination and creates that incandescent, mythological effect of the volcano that will inevitably invite you to be reborn as well.
